NGOs funding Minister behind separatism move - NPM
The National Patriotic Movement yesterday said that following the demise of the LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran, some Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) have started directing their funds to a Cabinet Minister.
PNM Chairman Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, addressing a press conference in Colombo yesterday, accused a particular Minister who crossed over to the Government ranks of being behind the NGO funding and promoting separatism. He was earlier elected on the UNP ticket from a Southern Provincial electorate at the last general elections.
Amarasekera said though terrorism was defeated, separatism was raising its head. He described it as a bad scenario especially after valiant efforts of the security forces.
He added that what cannot be taken through the front door is now being taken through the back door.
Amarasekara also said that recently in Badulla there was a discussion between Construction and Engineering Services Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathna, Port Development Minister Dilan Perera, Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda, Constitutional Affairs Minister D. E. W. Gunasekara, Eastern Province Council Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan and Eastern Provincial Council Heath Minister M. C. A. M. Hizbullah to push for the implementation of the 13th Amendment.
He said that their discussion also focused that the 13th Amendment must be implemented to solve the ethnic problem and also to devolve Police and Land Powers to the Provincial Councils.
Amarasekara further said that although Sri Lanka won in the Human Rights vote, it was UN Ambassador for Sri Lanka Dayan Jayathilake who promoted the proposal that Government would fully implement the 13th Amendment.
He also said that there is a misconception that due to the inclusion of the 13th Amendment many countries backed Sri Lanka during the vote on Human Rights.
He also hinted about Jayathilake’s past posts like serving under Vartharaja Perumal.
