5000 skilled craftsmen available in N/E

The Vocational Training and Technical Colleges in the North and East have trained around 5000 youths in different trades and these young men and women will be able to find suitable employment soon in public or private sector organizations, the Vocational and Technical Training Ministry said.

Vocational and Technical Training Minister Piyasena Gamage told The Island Financial Review that despite war was going on in the North and East the Jaffna and Ampara technical colleges had produced highly skilled young men and women in various trades to meet the demand of the country.

He said that in 2008 the Jaffna and Ampara technical colleges had successfully trained 5000 youths as electricians, motor mechanics, air condition and refrigeration technicians, aluminium fabricators, masons, carpenters, plumbers and business administrators.

He noted that the Vocational and Technical Training Ministry had decided to increase the intake of students up to 15,000 in 2009 with the re-opening of the Kilinochchi Technical College.
