High quality cinnomon exports to increase
The Export Agriculture Department Director General W.A.L.Gunaratne told The Island Financial Review that the government would spend Rs 24 million to construct the two centres. The centres had formulated a course of studies for cinnamon cultivators on quality cinnamon cultivation and cleanliness because this process would pay good dividends to cinnamon farmers.
He said that some European countries and Japan had become largest export market for Sri Lankan cinnamon and the demand had been growing annually. When good quality cinnamon exported more export markets could be captured with a better sources foreign exchange.
Gunaratna pointed out that China had become one of the major cinnamon exporting countries but according to some experiments carried out it was revealed that Chinese cinnamon contained a harmful substance called cumarin. As a consequence of this the Chinese cashiya cinnamon had lost export markets. The demand for Chinese cinnamon had dwindled.
He added that since the demand of the Chinese cinnamon had gone down, the demand for Sri Lankan cinnamon had increased to a great extent in the World Market. It was absolutely essential to meet the demand of foreign countries for Sri Lankan cinnamon and a wider export market could be captured with exports of quality cinnamon.
