‘Hot line’ for  complains against mosquito breeders

A hotline was opened for the public to inform on those who flouted the ‘Mosquito Breeding and Control Act.’ The public is welcome to tip off the Chief Public Health Inspector (PHI) at the Health Ministry on persons guilty of being careless about the menace endangering not only their own lives, but also the lives of their neighbors

Phone 011 2 665329 and that the number would be open to the public from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Ministry spokesman said.

At discussion held on Tuesday (02) evening at the Health Ministry, it was decided to devolve some of the powers vested with the Director General, Health Services by the ‘Mosquito Breeding Act No. 11 of 2007’ among several other stakeholders to make better progress in bringing the situation under control.

The Ministry issued circulars to disseminate the powers among the medical officers of the Health Department, PHIs, Chief Medical Officers of Municipal Councils, Public Health Inspectors of Provincial Councils. They will therefore have the power to inspect premises, arrest or fine those who are guilty of having mosquito breeding places in their surroundings.

The Ministry initiated a widespread dengue control programme yesterday morning commencing from the National Hospital, Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Health Ministry, De Soyza Maternity Hospital, Castle Street Hospital for Women, Kalubowila Teaching Hospital and Eye Hospital.

The island has over 7,000 identified dengue patients with the number of dengue deaths closing in on 90. The Government Medical Officers’ Association said that these were the records of those who had been treated at government hospitals. The numbers could possibly be more as many may have taken treatment from private hospitals.
