

Cash robbed from Agrarian services centre
Rs 680,000 locked in a cupboard at the Agrarian Services Centre at Lunama in Hungama has been stolen while another sum of Rs 1,080,000 kept in another cupboard had remained untouched.
A complaint in this regard was lodged with the Hungama Police on Monday by the Agrarian Services Development Officer of the Centre. He said the watcher of the Centre had been gagged and tied up before the robbers forced their way into the Centre.
A retired Divisional Secretariat officer, on conditions of anonymity, told The Island that it was against Government regulations to keep such large sums of money in an office without iron safes and in cupboards. This was also confirmed by the Police. The monies should have been banked. Initial investigations had revealed that the theft had taken placed during the weekend.
Hungama Police sources said yesterday that two anonymous callers had telephoned the Police and revealed vital information on the theft and the Police are working on that information to nab the suspects.
On the instructions of Tangalle SSP Neil, Daluwatte, OIC Hungama SI H.T.M.Thushara and a team of policemen are conducting investigations.
