OAS chief says he hasn’t talked to Cuba about OAS

TORONTO (AP) - The chief of the Organization of American States said Tuesday he hasn’t been in contact with Cuban officials despite last week’s vote to lift a decades-old suspension of Cuba’s membership.

OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza said he has tried to talk to Cuba before but had no luck because the country has made it clear it is not interested in rejoining.

Cuba formally rejected an offer to rejoin the OAS on Monday. Fidel Castro has long maintained his island has no use for the group.

The OAS voted last week to lift the suspension of Cuba’s membership as part of an effort at regional solidarity.

A Cuban statement published Monday in the communist newspaper Granma says the government is satisfied "with this expression of sovereignty and community" but repeats that Cuba "will not return to the OAS."

It said the 34-member OAS has long supported Washington’s hostility toward Cuba and that the country prefers to retain its independence.
