Younis wants to win T20 World title for Woolmer

Pakistan captain Younus Khan wants to pay tribute to former coach Bob Woolmer by winning the ICC World Twenty20.

The former England batsman died in Jamaica during the 2007 World Cup, hours after his side had suffered a shock defeat to Ireland.

Younus was part of a Pakistan side that came agonisingly close to claiming the inaugural World Twenty20 just six months later, losing out to India in the final.

Speaking on the eve of his side’s semi-final with South Africa, the 31-year-old hailed the influence Woolmer had on him during his time as coach.

"He was an inspiring person for us," Younus said.

"He was like a father figure for me and for the whole team. We all still miss him and if we win the World Cup I will dedicate that final game to him."

Younus has promoted wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal to an opening spot during the current tournament, a move he said was inspired by Woolmer.

He added: "I learned a lot of things from Bob and he was always flexible, especially in the batting order. I thought we needed a couple of in-form batsmen for big games like the semi-final and final."

However, the Pakistan skipper remains concerned with his side’s inability to post a large total, their 175 for five against the Netherlands being the biggest score they have set so far.

An innings of 159 for five could have put them in trouble against Ireland, but a strong bowling performance saw them through the Super Eights clash.

"Everybody knows we’re slow starters. We take some time and we need some time for ourselves and now we are just two wins away from winning the World Cup," Younus said.

"I still believe we were 20 runs short (against Ireland). It would be good if we could put 180 or 200 on the board because in the semi-finals there will be good teams against us and it’s not possible to win all the time scoring 150."
