SLIM launches "Practicing Marketer Status"

The Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) recently launched the Practicing Marketer (Sri Lanka) Status with a host of top marketers and professionals in attendance and Chairman of Hemas Holdings Lalith de Mel as Chief Guest.

The success or failure of an organisation hinges on the marketers’ ability to make decisions. This is an all too obvious point. However, in order to make decisions there needs to be many facets in a marketer’s professional outlook such as out-of-the-box thinking to drive successful businesses and understanding the operating environment. A lack of such perceptiveness will undoubtedly be detrimental to an organization. A Practicing Marketer will be measured by his continuous professional development in his selected field, thus ensuring his knowledge is always current. It is in keeping in line with this ethos, that SLIM initiated this new status programme.

Speaking on the launch Vice President (Education) SLIM Thushara Perera said, "We are the national body of marketers incorporated by an Act of Parliament and have been operating for the last thirty nine years in serving the local marketing fraternity. We believe that marketer needs to be evaluated on how well his / her performance is reflected in the context that he operates. The context in this instance is the Sri Lankan environment, which is going through turbulent times. Successful marketers operating in this environment need to be recognised. This is where the ‘Practising Marketer’ status awarded by SLIM plays a pivotal role."

Speaking on the initiative President SLIM, Saliya Weerasekera said, "We as marketers have been taught theories and frameworks which are universal, but how well we implement the learning in the local context is what matters. We believe in having an assessment-based status conferred on marketers who have excelled in this competitive environment. This is what led SLIM to launch this new status. We truly believe that a marketer’s true excellence can only be evaluated through his timely decision making ability and continuous learning in the local market".

Ordinary Members, Fellows, or Honorary Members of SLIM, can join the programme at no extra cost and start recording their development activity. If one fulfills the minimum required points he/she will be invited to make a payment and obtain the Practicing Marketer Status. There onwards one needs to maintain the embership with SLIM and pay the annual fee Learning and development activities are grouped into the following categories - Professional Growth, Studies Related to Qualifications, Brief Training Courses and Workshops, Sharing knowledge, Mentoring, Conferences and Exhibitions, Private Study, Community Contribution and Professional Events.
