

Deposits for Uva PC elections closes today at 12.00 noon
Commissioner of Elections, Dayananda Dissanayake yesterday said that the deadline for Independent Groups to hand over their deposits for the polls to the Uva Provincial Council would close at 12 noon today, Tuesday, June (23).
Additional Commissioner of Elections (Provincial and Local), W. P. Sumanasiri said that nominations for Uva PC would close at 12 noon on Wednesday, June (24).
Senior SLAS officer attached to the Elections Secretariat, Consultant Bandula Kulatunga said the applications for Postal voting would close on June ( 25).
It would be compulsory for all voters to produce their National Identity Card or any alternative Identity card recognised by the Commissioner of Elections for voting.
Kulatunga said that any voter who does not possess any such identity, should not delay in applying to the Assistant Commissioner of Elections of the district they live in to obtain a temporary identity issued specially for voting purposes.
The Chief Returning Officer (GA) for the Badulla District, Rohana Keerthi Dissanayake said that there were 577,814 registered voters in the district who were eligible to vote according to the Electoral Register for 2008 and each political party or independent group had to submit the names of 24 candidates of which 21 would be elected to the Uva PC.
Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the Badulla District Namal Talangama said that each independent group had to deposit Rs 48,000 by 12 noon today.
Due to the delay in appointing a district secretary for the District of Moneragala, the Deputy Commissioner of Elections for the Kandy District U. Amaradasa as the Chief Returning Officer for the PC Elections he said that there were 342,00 registered voters in the district and each political party or independent group had to submit the names of 14 candidates of which 11 would be elected to the Uva PC.
The Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the Moneragala District K. J. S. Madhawa said that each independent group had to deposit Rs 28,000 by 12 noon today.
He said that only the United Socialist Party led by Siritunga Jayasuriya had submitted its nominations last week.
