

Youth candidates compulsory for acceptance of nominations - Asst. EC
The Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the Jaffna District P. Kuhanathan said that including the names of 12 youth candidates was compulsory for any nomination to be accepted.
Six recognised political parties: the TULF, DTNA, UNP, DPLF, EPRLF (Naba Wing) and the ITAK had appointed their authorised agents.
The deadline for independent groups to pay their deposits was 12 noon on Wednesday, June 24 and nominations from recognised political parties by 12 noon of Thursday, June (25).
The deadline for applications for postal voting and voting by displaced persons would close on Thursday, June (25).
The NICs or an alternate identity card which was recognised by the Commissioner of Elections was mandatory for voting, he said.
Anyone not possessing such an identity card should submit an application addressed to the Assistant Commissioner of Elections, Jaffna District, without delay for issuing of a temporary identity card for voting purposes.
So far three Independent Groups had handed in their deposits to contest the Jaffna MC.
The independent group deposits were paid by Abimanasigham Manikkasothy, Thambirajah Thavarajah and Arumugam Sellathurai.
Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the Vanni District A. S. Karunanidhi said that each nomination list should include the names of six youth candidates if their nominations were to be accepted.
Three independent groups had submitted their deposits of Rs. 3,750 and Group Leaders were Rajendram Anthonidas of Katkuli, Vavuniya, Abraham Jeevarajah of Katkuli, Vavuniya and Sellathurai Ravindran of Sinna Pudhukulam, Vavuniya.
Karunanidhi said that five recognised political parties the UNP, ITAK, TULF, DTNA and the UPFA had appointed their authorised agents.
