PUC to check electrical circuits in schools

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has launched a programme to check whether electrical circuits installed in schools are in safe condition and give necessary instructions to correct them if they are not up to the standard.

Dr. Jayatissa de Costa, Chairman, Public Utilities Commission said that the relevant programme will be implemented jointly with Ministry of Education under the powers vested by 2002. No. 15 Parliamentary Act to regularize electricity service and give an efficient service to the consumers with high standard.

At present, there are nearly 10,000 schools, and of them there are 698 1-A school, 1937 A-C Schools, 4166 Type 2 schools and 2861 Type 3 Schools. AB Type Schools, AC Type Schools are given electricity. Unfortunately electrical circuits in some schools are not up to the specified standard posing a threat to the students as well as the teachers.

Under the instructions of the President, the programme will start as a pilot project from schools in Hambantota District followed by other schools in the country, he said.
