Sri Lanka team for Asian Youth Games take wings tomorrow
Sri Lanka team taking part in the first ever Asian Youth Games will leave the country for Singapore from the Bandaranaike International Airport tomorrow.
The Youth Games will be held from June 29 to July 7.
Forty two countries in the Asian region will take part in the Asian Youth Games. The youngsters from Sri Lanka will compete in five (Athletics, Swimming, Table Tennis, Basketball and Beach Volleyball) out of nine sports included in the Games.
The Sri Lanka National Olympic Committee and the Sports Ministry has taken steps to include 30 athletes and 11 officials in the contingent for the Asian Youth Games.
Heshan Unnambuwe of Trinity College, Kandy has been named the captain of the Sri Lankan team while Nishantha Piyasena, the secretary of the Sri Lanka Cycling Federation has been appointed as the Chief de mission.
Sri Lanka team is sponsored by Sri Lanka Telecom.
Nishantha Piyasena requested the Sri Lanka team to refrain from engaging in any acts of indiscipline in Singapore.
He requested the young sportsmen and women to give priority to safeguard the good name of the country. The Chef de mission said that winning is secondary to it.
