Campaign for more women’s representation in politics
KANDY - The Political Representation for Women, an organisation campaigning for higher representation for women in political bodies, will launch a public signature collection campaign in Kandy on Wednesday, July 01.
The campaign will press for the allocation of at least 25 percent of nominations of all political groups for women, a member of the Advisory Committee of the Organisation, Central Provincial Council member Shanthini Kongahage said.
The campaign will agitate for the inclusion of a clause in the amendments to the Local Government Bill ensuring a quota of 25 percent for women. The Bill is expected to be presented in Parliament shortly, Kongahage said.
The signature collection campaign will be launched at the environs of George E. de Silva Park, Kandy, on Wednesday morning.
Leader of the Opposition of the Western Provincial Council, Rosy Senanayake and several other leading women politicians are in the campaign, Kongahage said.
