City Coroner contradicts hospital director statement

City Coroner Edward Ahangama, referring to a story in a weekend newspaper (not of the Upali Group) by Dr. Ariyawansa Director Accidents Services at the Colombo National Hospital claiming there had been 111 fatalities caused by traffic accidents between 1 January (2009) and May 31 said that according to statistics maintained at the Coroners Court 225 lives have been lost during the said five months.

Out of the 225 fatal accidents, 42 persons had died before addmission to hospital, he said. In addition 51 Court cases related to traffic accidents were pending. The Coroner’s Court maintains records of evidence, Motor Examiners reports and Traffic Police sketches of the scene in addition to other relevant documents.
