RDA continuing with with its mistakes

The Road Development Authority appears to be set to experiment with the Dehiwela junction yet again. First they had a roundabout, then a roundabout with signals and now signals only. The latest is the traffic diversion for a Flyover that has started from Saturday. This I found when a relative visiting me by bus from Dickwella had been dropped at Kohuwela and arrived a good 2 hours late. I also hear of bylanes and other so-called alternative routes blocked by re-routing long distance buses.

As a retired engineer who has worked in many countries, I watched in amusement at the construction of the Nugegoda Flyover. Every one who drives on the. High Level Road would confirm that the earlier delay at Nugegoda Junction has now been transferred to Gansaba Junction and Kirullapone. This could have been predicted if only the RDA had done a capacity study. But they spent over Rs 2000 million plus another Rs 900 million for land acquisition to only shift the traffic block. It would not take a genius to predict that after all the inconvenience the people of Dehiwela and those travelling on Galle Road will be put through, due to the proposed diversions, the RDA will succeed only in moving the traffic blocks to Kawdana and Kalubowila junctions! To do this Isure they will spend a couple of billion rupees that our country desperately needs for development.

It is high time that His Excellency the President intervenes and investigates if the required studies have been made for this proposal and if indeed the Nugegoda flyover has actually resulted in any improvement for those using High Level Road. An independent study of this by a university is recommended. It is clear that those at the head of the RDA have their own reasons for continuing with the mistakes they are making and it is only the President who can intervene to safeguard the good name of the Government at this time of renewed motivation for development.
