

KANDY - Defeat of the armed terrorists is not the end of terrorism in Sri Lanka. There are some LTTE terrorists in hiding in other countries according to intelligence reports, said DIG Central Pujith Jayasundara at the Kandy District Coordinating Committee meeting on Tuesday (30).
Plantation Industries Minister D. M. Jayaratne chaired the meeting.
DIG Jayasundara said the public should be cautious and assist the police to apprehend culprits responsible for any suspicious activities.
At a recent meeting with the Defence Secretary and high ranking police officers it was stressed that vigilance was important although the armed terrorism was defeated in the country, the DIG, said.
He said infiltration of dangerous elements into vital economic centres could not be ruled out considering the population component of the Central Province. Therefore it was necessary for all to be vigilant.
He also said that the police had organised seminars to educate the public through people’s representatives and Civil Defence Committees in all 25 police divisions of the Kandy district.
In the recent past, according to intelligence reports over 1000 kilogrammes of explosives had been brought into the Kandy district. Of that stock, police have still to recover over 500 kilogrammes, the DIG disclosed and urged the public assistance to recover the hidden explosives.
He said that over sixty persons had been taken into custody and kept in remand in connection with terrorist activities.
Police were kept alert to deal with crime in the district since there was a trend to the increase the crime rate in the district.
Police have arrested many key suspects among whom were army deserters and those who left the police and some of them were in service as well, the DIG, disclosed.
SSP Shantha Udapamunuwa gave a detailed account of the current security situation in the Kandy division.
Chief Minister Central PC, MPs Ven. Udawatte Nanda Thera, Mahinda Abeykoon, Dimuthu Abeykoon, Navaratna Banda, Kandy District Secretary Gotabhaya Jayaratna, Central Provincial Members and officials were present at the meeting.
