The UK has approved a grant of £500,000 to UNICEF for an emergency measles and polio vaccination campaign, British High Commissioner Dr. Peter Hayes announced yesterday. The UK remains committed to assisting Sri Lanka with its humanitarian efforts. Since September 2008, the total amount of humanitarian aid given by the UK to Sri Lanka totals £12.5 million," he said in a press release.
The emergency measles and polio vaccination campaign will cover all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Vavuniya. Nutritional supplements will also be provided. This programme will operate out of emergency health clinics in the IDP camps which the UK funded through the International Office of Migration (IOM) last month.
