Over 15,175 caesarean births in 2007 – Health Minister
Over 15,175 caesarean deliveries were performed in 2007, 31 percent of the total number of births, Health Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva revealed yesterday

According to the findings of a research carried out by the Family Health Bureau, over a number of years on ‘safe pregnancy,’ it was discovered that the number of caesarean operations exceeded even the numbers defined by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The Minister said that considering this large number it was evident that the caesarean sections had been performed mainly for monetary reasons.

De Silva called on the Family Health Bureau to carry out yet another research to discover the reason for the enormous number of caesarean births in Sri Lanka.
