

Young Sri Lankans taking part in the Asian Youth Games recorded several victories on the third day of the games here yesterday with Madushan Herath hogging the limelight clocking his personal best to register the fastest time in the Boys’ 800 meter first round heats.
Ratnayake MV athlete Herath clocked 1:59.30 seconds to finish first in the heats of the 800 meters. His time was the best recorded in the three heats of the event.
Speaking to The Island after the event, he said that he had the ability to win a gold medal in the final to be held tomorrow (03).
Meanwhile the Sri Lankan Boys’ and Girls’ 4x200 relay teams qualified for the finals in yesterday’s heats.
While the boys’ team won the third place of their heat to qualify for the final, the girls’ team secured the final berth as there were only eight teams to compete.
Keshani Perera of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya who clocked 16.50 seconds to finish fourth in the 100 meter hurdles heat couldn’t find a place in the final.
Dulaj Lahiru and H.H. Nadeeshani will compete in the Boys’ and Girls’ 400 meter finals today. Although their timing recorded in the heats were lower than their counterparts, both said that they will try their best in today’s finals.
Cagers record back to back wins
Sri Lankan Boys and Girls basketball teams recorded remarkable victories to book quarter-final berths in the Basketball Championship in the matches held in the morning and afternoon sessions yesterday.
Boys team comprising of three players, namely, Clinton Devakumar, Nimesh de Fonseka and Yohan Keyzer beat Nepal and Qatar teams 34-11 and 34-14 respectively.
Girls team comprising of Thushani Danushika, Jayani Ransari and Swairan Fernando beat Uzbekistan 34-29 (15-14, 12-06, 7-9) in a closely contested match.
