The Sinhala Throne - A Rejoinder
I was really amused to
read G.A.D. Sirimal’s reply to Tissa Devendra on the above subject. To
start with GADS has tried to gloss over -his lack of knowledge of
historical dates by saying that the correction strengthens his argument
that the Britisher was magnanimous in returning the throne after safe
keeping in England in 1937, during colonial rule over Ceylon. Does he
imply that the Britisher was of the view that the throne was not safe in
Ceylon from the time Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe was dethroned (in 1818) up
to 1937, when they were in full control of the Island? It had taken more
than a century to show their magnanimity. After all they had returned
only what belonged to our country.K. Jeyaraj
