Children’s safety first!
The article in the Island of  24/06 under caption Taking risks is a healthy thing for children has prompted me to contribute my 2cts worth.  Although that writer says risk taking is good for children, the majority of parents would not agree.

The following incident  should open the eyes of the  authorities regarding the safety of children when organizing sports or public events, where any accident could take place.

About 3  weeks ago, I was a casual visitor to a sports meet - Cub Scouts Sports Meet organized by Scouts Association at  Pedris grounds.  During the sports meet, one small boy got injured and his leg was bleeding profusely.   His parents and friends and the teacher in charge were literally running round in circles trying to get some help to stop the bleeding.  But, their search was in vain as there was no first aid team in attendance.

As a senior citizen, I was shocked at this somewhat serious accident.   I asked them to rush the child to the accident ward, which they did immediately.  It was lucky his parents were there to attend to him, if not the teacher would have got into a mess without the support of a first aid team.

Sports events are generally prone to accidents.  It is very sad that the organizers of this particular event failed to provide adequately for the safety of the little cubs.

Heads of schools should be very vigilant when sending their students for sports activities or public events, away from the school premises. They should look at the safety of their children first.   I hope now a days, schools do have their own first aid boxes / first aid teams, like in our days!
