Weerakkody observed that spreading operations globally and cherry picking countries for their particular skills set is the future of outsourcing and knowledge process outsourcing which is the top end of the BPO value chain which is quite a different world compared to BPO will be the area Sri Lanka should focus because we have a vast pool of well trained Accountants that is where the money is for us as a country, data and voice is around $ 4-$ 9 per seat per hour and Low end KPO work like analytics is around $ 12 - $ 20 per seat per hour.
While it is likely that new countries will take away some work from India, Weerakkody speaking to us observed it is very unlikely that any country can become an equal alternative to India for a while, cost apart, no country has the kind of IT skills that India has and neither do they have the manpower supply that comes anywhere close to India.
Commenting on some of the challenges Weerakkody observed that quality manpower is in short supply because we have graduates who are educated but unemployable. To make the employable they need to have certain "hygiene skill sets" things like, articulation, presentation, business savvy and logical reasoning. So this is an issue the industry and the government should address immediately by investing heavily in the training of the work force to acquire these skills. In the long term, we need to improve the quality of higher education and ensure more children get educated in English.
