The Organisation for the
Protection of the Properties and Rights of Railway Employees yesterday
said the contract to the caterer to maintain the services in the ill
fated ‘Yal Devi’ train had been awarded violating the tender procedures.
Sumathipala Manawadu, General Secretary said though the tender procedure
clearly stipulates that any person or institution selected for the
purpose of providing catering services in the railway has to deposit a
certain sum of money, the particular caterer has not done so.
The Union asked since the caterer had not made a deposit from who
will the Railways recover the damages caused to the buffet car in the
train due to a fire caused by the explosion of a gas cylinder.
Manawadu said due to bureaucratic bungling the poor tax payer has to
bear the brunt.
