Army could be used to battle crime – New Army Commander

Kandy - New Sri Lanka Army Commander Lt. Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya said in Kandy on Saturday (18) that there were no plans to shift the army personnel stationed in other parts of the country to the North.

Addressing the media after calling on the prelate of Malwatte, Lt. Gen. Jayasuriya said that additional camps would be set up in the North and East if the need arose for that.

The Army Commander said training and recruitment of soldiers would continue, though the war was over. There was a possibility of using the army personnel in the development activities of the country, he said.

Asked whether the army personnel could be used to eliminate crime, Lt. Gen. Jayasuriya said the army could be deployed for that purpose, though such matters came under the purview of the police.

Mrs. Jayasuriya and children accompanied the army Commander on his visit to the Most Ven. Tibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of Malwatte.

The army commander paid his homage to the sacred Tooth Relic.
