Minister Premjayanth’s directive:
Principals say they cannot run schools without donations
Several principals of National Schools in the Galle district have taken exception to Education Minister Susil Premjayanth’s recent directive banning donations from students and asking principals to return the money so collected.

Principals have said that if they implemented the minister’s directive, they wouldn’t be able to run their schools.

Addressing a recent gathering of school principals at a hotel in Galle, R. M. Werahera, Principal of Mahinda College, Galle, said that schools couldn’t be run without donations. He said if they implemented the ministerial directive, school administration would collapse.

Mrs. Saraswathie Dhahanayake, Principal of Sangamitta, Galle, said that she needed about Rs. 150,000 to meet expenses monthly. She said she would collect Rs. 2,000 each from each GCE (Advanced Level) student in the science stream.
