Seminar on Biofuels
The College of Chemical Sciences at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon is conducting a one day seminar on biofuels titled "Biofuels - Energy for the future of Mankind". The seminar will be held from 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday 22 July 2009 at the PPGL Siriwardene Auditorium at the Institute's Headquarters at Adamantane House, 341/22, Kotte Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya.

The Chief Guest at the seminar will be Mr. Methsiri Wijegunawardena, the acting Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC). The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation is partly sponsoring the seminar and the speakers include Mr. Cyril Suduwella Deputy General Manager (CPC), researchers at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, working on biofuel projects and leading scientists from the University of Peradeniya, University of Colombo and University of Kelaniya.

At the seminar, different fossil fuel types, their world wide distribution, current use and future risks of depletion, comparability of biofuels with petrochemicals and advantages, new trends of fuel research, wood gas production, carbon trading towards sustainable energy development, environmental pollution and health risks of fossil fuel burning and biotechnology in the production of ethanol as a fuel will be discussed.

The results obtained by researchers at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon will also be presented at the seminar and future directions sought.
