Govt. must compensate 18,000 families
cheated by Danduvam — Sajith

Hambantota District UNP MP Sajith Premadasa said yesterday the government must take immediate action to compensate people who had been cheated by the late Piyadasa Ratnayake alias ‘Danduwam Mudalali’. He said a Presidential Task Force had to be appointed to investigate the scam. Of the 18,000 families who had invested in Damduwam Mudalali’s Promissory notes, 15,000 were from the Hambantota District, he said.

Danduwam Mudalali operating from Hungama had accepted 150 million rupees from people promising a monthly interest rate of seven per cent. He had done so for 14 years and when he was unable to pay neither interest nor capital, people had complained to the Police, MP Premadasa said.

The problem had been aggravated by Danduvam Mudalali’s death at the hands of an unidentified gang a few weeks ago, MP Premadasa said.

Addressing the media at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo yesterday (19), MP Premadasa said people in his district had been struck by a financial ‘tsunami’. He said the government was duty bound to compensate the victims of the Danduvan fraud.
