Australia seeks better cooperation with
Lanka on people smuggling
Australia’s Immigration Minister Chris Evans says arrangements with Sri Lanka on tackling migration and people smuggling has to be strengthened while there also has to be better cooperation between the two countries on the issue.

According to The Age newspaper the Minister, who will visit Sri Lanka this week, has said a third or so of the recent illegal boat people to arrive in Australia have been people from Sri Lanka.

"A third or so of the recent arrivals have been people from Sri Lanka and some of those haven't been found to be refugees, some of them have been, if you like, economic migrants, and so some who have been found out will be returned," he said.
