England declare at 311 against Australia
LONDON (AP) - Andrew Flintoff claimed two Australia wickets to hinder its pursuit of a world record 522 to win the second test Sunday, as the tourists slumped to 76-2 at lunch on the fourth day.
England is seeking its first test win over Australia at Lord’s in 75 years and edged nearer to that landmark result by dismissing openers Simon Katich and Phillip Hughes, both in controversial circumstances. Captain Ricky Ponting was holding firm on 37 and Mike Hussey had 13.
Australia lost its first wicket to the 19th ball of the day. The ever-threatening fast bowler Flintoff had Katich caught at gully by Kevin Pietersen for six after the left-hander attempted a cover drive.
TV replays showed Flintoff had overstepped at the bowling crease and a no-ball should have been called but the mistake from umpire Rudi Koertzen, standing in his 100th test, went against Australia.
Hughes was dropped off James Anderson when an edge to Flintoff at second slip carried to his left hand at ankle height, but he was unable to grasp the catch and a single was conceded. Ponting pulled the next ball for four.
Hughes did not score another run, however, and his edge off Flintoff to Andrew Strauss at first slip next over saw him depart.
Hughes reluctantly walked off after Strauss claimed the catch, but Ponting told him to wait until the umpires gave him out. The umpires discussed the incident and Billy Doctrove confirmed from his square leg position that the catch was taken cleanly and therefore replays were not used.
Magnified slow motion replays, however, failed to confirm the catch was clean.
