Polls not being conducted to schedule – PAFFREL
At least four elections must take place in Sri Lanka once in six years, but it has not been happening in the recent past due to a number of reasons, according to the premier election monitoring organization in the country.
People’s Action For free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Acting Executive Director Rohan Hettiarachchi told The Island that elections should be held at the correct time. "If not there would be elections every month which would be a heavy burden on the tax payer", he said.
Commenting on the elections to the Jaffna Municipality and Vavuniya Irbans Council, Hettiarchchi said that this is a valuable opportunity for the people of Jaffna and Vavuniya to elect their local representatives. It was a positive sign that the war clouds had faded away and the stabilization of the democratic mechanism is underway, he said.
