

Arjuna wants SLC and NOC probed
Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga yesterday complained to the Presidential Investigation Unit Director General Tilak Iddamalgoda about a large scale of corruption and malpractices that took place at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and National Olympic Committee (NOC).
Ranatunga told ‘The Island’ that as a Parliamentarian he had raised these issues in parliament on numerous occasions, but they had fallen on deaf ears.
Ranatunga has raised questions about two highly controversial television deals signed by two previous administrations of the sport.
The charges against the National Olympic Committee are:
1) The monies and equipment received by the NOC from various countries have been subjected to irregularities and used in a fraudulent manner.
2) The financial irregularities have taken place where the monies received by the NOC as Tsunami aid.
3) The transactions concerning the aid received from the International Olympic Committee.
4) There have been a large scale of financial irregularities where the sponsorship money of Rs 1000 million granted by the state for the 2006 South Asian Games and the failure of the NOC to submit accounts certified by the Auditor General.
5) Failure of the NOC to submit its accounts audited by the Auditor General since 1996 to date though it is mandatory as per 1973 N0 25 Sports Act.
6) The continuation in office by the same office bearers from 1996-2008 thus violating the Sports Act and the constitution of the NOC.
Charges against SLC are as follows
1) The deprivation of monies to the tune of over Rs 40 million as a result of the recent illegal and fraudulent ‘Nimbus’ television deal.
3) The innumerable losses caused and will be caused to SLC as a result of certain conditions stipulated in the agreement signed between SLC and Taj TV for telecasting rights.
4) The frauds and financial irregularities taken place with regard to development of playgrounds by the SLC.
