NZ players choose Tests over IPL
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - New Zealand's top players have put the national team ahead of the financial lure of the Indian Premier League by committing to international duty in a scheduling clash between the two.
Several top players had delayed signing new contracts with New Zealand Cricket, fearing a scheduling clash next year between New Zealand's series against Australia and the Indian Twenty20 league.
The IPL has been moved forward in 2010, to an early March start date, to accommodate the ICC World Twenty20 championship. The new dates clashed with New Zealand's home test and limited-overs series against Australia, raising fears some players might choose the more lucrative IPL over the national team.
Those fears were allayed when the last of New Zealand's 20 contracted players, including all of its current IPL players, signed NZC contracts by a Friday deadline.
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori, his deputy Brendon McCullum, Kyle Mills, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder and Ross Taylor, who played in the last IPL tournament, all re-signed. Fast bowler Shane Bond, who returned to New Zealand after playing in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League, also accepted a new contract.
