VAAS Retiring after Untiring Effort![]() |
Warnakulasuriya Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas from Mattumagala called it a day from Test cricket last week. His marathon stint for SL which began in Kandy against Pakistan on Aug. 26, 1994, ended up offering him the title the best fast bowler of the island in her Test era. His grand record in Tests is only a mere proof while his untiring effort in unhelpful subcontinent tracks being the decisive factor. The 1994-95 series against the Kiwis where SL won her first Test series abroad in Napier, his 26 scalps (including 14 in a match) when SL routed Windies 3-0 in 2001-02 and his 300-wicket milestone in 2005-06 against India were some major achievements made alongside a national team that gradually rose from minnows to a world power. Here he’s pictured while announcing his retirement from Tests in Colombo on July 19. That white-clad elegance in Tests with the cherry in hand, darting outswingers, sudden in-dippers and reverse swings, for over a decade, will be no more. Vaas certainly was an act of class.
