Kelaniya University re-opens on July 30

The Kelaniya University administration yesterday announced that the University will re-open for academic activities on Thursday (30). The inquiries including disciplinary action for undergraduates who damaged university property will be continued, Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sarath Amunugama told The Island last evening.

The University has remained closed for over a month since June 11. Residents of Dalugama attacked undergraduates of the University with stones and clubs following an assault by a student on a youth from the area in a tea boutique near the campus. University authorities summoned the police to bring the situation under control. A woman constable and a female undergraduate were injured in the attack. All faculties of the University, except for the Medical Faculty located in Ragama, remained closed following the incident.

Prof. Amunugama said the inquiry into the damage of university property was being handled by the Kiribathgoda police because outsiders were involved. "All faculties will be open for academic activities on Thursday (30). Inquiries will continue."
