Polls fever grips Jaffna

With the forthcoming Nikini Full Moon Poya Day, August 5, being the last day for campaigning for the Jaffna Municipal Council, election fever has reached high tempo. Like during polls in other parts of the country huge banners and cutouts were seen.

The Campaign for Free and fair Elections (CAFFE) yesterday said that the only difference was that unlike in the other parts of the country environmental pollution was at its lowest especially there being not a single polythene decoration.

Another special feature was that not a single political party had had a massive rally while all conducted only pocket meetings thus allowing the candidate to get physically closer to the voter. House to house campaign and distribution of hand bills were another choice of many candidates.

The voters and candidates were eager to see a civil administration in the town, after over two decades of civil unrest and war. All candidates woo the voters mentioning this aspect. However, there still seemed more disinterest among people about the elections, the CAFFE said.
