I thank Professor Fonseka for accepting that he objected to the NCMC once, changed his mind later and proceeded to teach the NCMC students both "officially" and "unofficially".
Professor Fonseka quotes John Maynard Keynes: "When facts change, I change my mind. What do you do sir?" and adds, "Taking appropriate U-turns could be part of intelligent adaptive behavior".
I agree with Professor Fonseka on the subject of "changes" and "adaptative behaviour". The very same is true of the 13th amendment too. The 13th Amendment was drafted many decades ago, when the ethnic and geopolitical landscape was totally different from today. Key players of the 13th amendment drama, Rajiv Gandhi, JR Jayewardene, A. Amirthalingam and V. Prabakaran are all dead. Only JR Jayewardene was lucky enough to have a natural death. Big brother India has changed into a more diplomatic and responsible neighbour since then.
Facts have changed Professor! These new developments necessitate new solutions, not the antiquated 13th amendment! We have to change, adapt and adopt new solutions.
Moreover, good Professor Fonseka tells us that he went to the NCMC as the Founder Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. Good for you Professor, we are happy for your achievement! I am sure that it was NOT an ad-hoc political appointment. The University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka would have called for applications, conducted proper interviews and selected the best person, in this case Prof Fonseka, for the job.
However, one wonders how an academic becomes a Professor and is selected for a higher post such as a Deanship of a Medical Faculty? Obviously, it has to be based on academic work and scientific publications. In that context, I ask Prof. Fonseka to be a sport and enlighten us with the details of his scientific papers published in peer reviewed academic journals (with an IMPACT FACTOR of 0.1 or above), that would have justified his appointment.
Please do not include the Obituaries, Appreciations, Economics and World Bank bashing letters. We are interested only in Physiology or Biomedical sciences related articles.
