Bangladesh beat West Indies by 52 runs

ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) - Bangladesh beat West Indies for the first time in a one-day international, winning by 52 runs Sunday after left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak claimed four wickets in the first of the three-match series.

Razzak took 4-39 to help dismiss West Indies for 194 in 43.4 overs at Windsor Park. Devon Smith topscored with 65.

Bangladesh had totaled 246-9 with Mohammad Ashraful hitting 57, captain Shakib-al-Hasan 54 and Mahmudullah 42 after being sent in to bat. Fast bowler Kemar Roach led the home team with 5-44.

The 27-year-old Razzak, flown in for the limited-overs leg of this tour, opened the bowling and took a wicket with his first ball, trapping Dale Richards lbw for 1 to make it 2-1.

The innings continued to be derailed as left-arm seamer Syed Rasel and Mahmudullah took early wickets.

Andre Fletcher dragged a ball from Rasel onto his stumps on 5, while Mahmudullah claimed captain Floyd Reifer to a skewed catch to backward point on 3 to lave the score on 23-3 in the eighth over.

Razzak landed another blow 19 runs later when he bowled Travis Dowlin for 10 in the 12th over.

Smith and David Bernard revived the chase in a 78-run stand for the fifth wicket. But Shakib returned to trap Smith lbw after missing a sweep. Smith hit three fours in 84 balls.

Bernard followed 10 runs later as Bangladesh took control at 130-6. The right-hander hit three fours in 38 off 62 balls before he holed out to deep midwicket off Naeem Islam’s offspinners.

Allrounders Darren Sammy and Rawl Lewis added 41 but the end came swiftly once fast bowler Rubel Hossain bowled Lewis for 21.

Sammy made 28 and No. 11 Nelon Pascal 0 before being out lbw to Razzak either side of the run out of Kemar Roach for 0.

Earlier, Bangladesh rebounded from losing a wicket on the first ball of the match to post its highest total against West Indies in 14 one-day internationals.

Roach gave the home team an electric start in the inaugural international at Windsor Park, gaining Tamim Iqbal’s edge to the wicketkeeper. But Ashraful and Junaid Siddique soon dulled the local fans with a second-wicket stand of 74.

Siddique hit 36 off 47 balls with three fours before he lofted medium-pacer David Bernard Jr. to mid-off.

Roach returned to dispatch Raqibul Hasan for 12 as he dragged on a yorker at 97-3 in the 34th over.

Ashraful passed fifty off 83 balls with five fours but was hampered by an injury and fell soon afterwards via the run out route. The diminutive right-hander was too slow to beat Floyd Reifer’s pinpoint return from cover.

When Mushfiqur Rahim on 11 slapped a ball to backward point off Rawl Lewis’ leg-spin at 149-5, Bangladesh was struggling.

But Shakib and Mahmudullah, two stars of the preceding test series success, added 79 off 66 balls to boost their team.

Mahmudullah provided the acceleration and launched two fours and two sixes. Shakib struck three fours in his calculated 54 of 60 balls.

Mahmudullah fell to Nikita Miller’s left-arm spin at 228-6 in the 47th over, and Roach picked up three cheap wickets toward the end.

Shakib scooped to short fine leg while Abdur Razzak (0) and Sydel Rasel (7) were undone by fast, straight deliveries.

The second match in the three-match series is at the same venue on Tuesday.
