Kyrgyzstan police disband opposition rally
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP) - Police in the Kyrgyz capital have disbanded an opposition rally protesting the outcome of a recent presidential vote, detaining about 100 demonstrators.
Opposition activists accuse the government of rigging last week’s election, in which the incumbent Kurmanbek Bakiyev won a second term with 76 percent of the vote.
Police quickly dispersed the protest on the outskirts of Bishkek.
District prosecutor Gulya Kozhokulova says 100 demonstrators who were detained will be fined.
Kyrgyzstan’s stability is of interest to Russia and the United States. The country hosts a U.S. air base crucial to operations in Afghanistan and has been the focus of competition between Washington and Moscow for regional influence.
