

Awareness campaign to arrest alcohol and
drug addiction among students
In order to discourage senior school children of urban schools in the Bingiriya, Panduwasnuwara, Nikaweratiya, Galgamuwa, Kuliyapitiya, and Dambadeniya electorates of the Kurunegala District towards taking liquor, drugs and smoking, a project to educate them on ills of these vices has been launched by the Health Services Department of the NWP-PC in collaboration with school principals, senior school teachers and moral development societies at their schools.
Mr. R. M. Sumanaweera, a senior school principal in Bingiriya electorate told "The Island" that 183 awareness programmes have been organized at school level during this year. Both clergy and laity would conduct lectures and demonstration programmes to enhance awareness of students of harmful consequences contributing to the downfall of families and society due to these vices. The government has allocated 1.4 million rupees for the project, he further added.
