Springboks name unchanged team for Wallabies clash
CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - South Africa retained Morne Steyn in its starting team to play Australia on Saturday after the flyhalf scored a Tri-Nations record 31 points in the victory over New Zealand last week.
Steyn came in for the injured Ruan Pienaar against the All Blacks, scoring a try and landing nine kicks out of 10 attempts in a 31-19 win to give the Springboks two wins from two home games against the Kiwis.
Pienaar was selected on the reserves bench on Tuesday, replacing backup center Wynand Olivier in the only change to the team.
Steyn’s retention and the selection of openside flanker Heinrich Brussow, who is deputizing for the suspended Schalk Burger, signals South Africa’s intention to play for territory and put pressure the Australia’s defense.
Brussow, who matched New Zealand openside flanker Richie McCaw in their two meetings, will be up against the highly regarded George Smith at the breakdown in the Newlands test.
"Brussow is playing particularly well at the moment," Smith said. "He is getting turnovers all over the field at the moment and playing behind a very good pack."
In that Springboks pack, Victor Matfield and Bakkies Botha will play together as a lock-pairing for the 50th time in a test. Matfield will play in his 86th test and Botha in his 60th.
Jean de Villiers, who played his 50th test last week, will play at center for the 40th time on Saturday, surpassing De Wet Barry’s record for the most capped Springbok in that position.
South Africa leads the standings with eight points, four more than New Zealand, which beat Australia 22-16 in the opening game. Australia has one point.
