English must be taught in English, not in mother tongue – Daria

English has to be taught to Sri Lankan students in English and not in their mother tongue. This applies to any language, Ukranian voluntary teacher Daria Naumova (23), who is here on the invitation of the Inter Universities Friendship Organisation to teach English to Grade 1 and Grade 5 students at the Vedamulla Maha Vidyalaya, Kelaniya, told The Island over the weekend.

She says "Modern techniques and scientific methods have to be used in teaching languages as the world is so developed today."

It is always better if the teachers conduct at least one class in the open air.

Sri Lanka is known the world over because of the 30 year old war and all eyes are on Sri Lanka, she said.
