Housing units built for govt. servants too expensive

Government servants in Galle complain that the housing units built in Wekunagoda and Habaraduwa by the Public Administration Ministry to be sold to government servants on installments are too expensive.

There are 512 two storeyed units built in Wekunagoda and 576 in Habaraduwa and are categorised into three different segments priced at Rs 1,9 million, Rs 3.5 million and Rs 4.4 million.

The prospective buyers are required to pay Rs. 100,000 as down payment and thereafter 40 % of the full amount in eight months.

A government servant who wished to remain anonymous, said even if both husband and wife were government servants, they couldn’t afford to purchase a housing unit under this scheme.

Only a drug peddler could afford to purchase them, he said.

"The Ministry has not even taken steps to introduce a loan scheme for the prospective buyers and this scheme is only a pipe dream as far as we are concerned," he said.
