Polls chief tells the public to vote early

Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake yesterday requested Political parties to advise their supporters to refrain from resorting to violence or malpractices as he would be compelled to nullify the voting at affected polling stations thereby delaying the announcement of the final results.

Post Master General M. K. B. Dissanayake said that he would request eligible voters who had not received their polling cards as yet to call over at the nearest Post Office or sub Post Office, identify themselves and obtain their Polling card.

Bandula Kulatunga the Senior SLAS official attached to the Elections Secretariat as advisor said that if everything went as planned, the first results of the Postal voting could be announced around midnight today.

The Government had made plans with the help of the Director of Government Information Department, Anusha Pelpita for the Elections Secretariat to announce the results through State and private media.

The Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the Jaffna District P. Kuhanathan said that 15 special Polling stations had been set up outside the Jaffna Peninsula for the 6,000 displaced voters to cast their votes in Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha.

A Polling Station for IDPs will be set up at Ariyalai in Jaffna.

He said that there were 100,417 registered voters in the Jaffna MC area and that 172 candidates of four political UNP, UPFA, TULF and ITAK and two Independent groups were in the fray to elect 20 members for 23 members including two Bonus seats to enter Jaffna MC.

The Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the District of Vavuniya, A. S. Karunanidhi said that arrangements had been made to have 18 Polling stations and three counting centres including one for counting Postal votes. There were 24,626 registered voters in the Vavuniya UC area and 135 candidates from six political parties ITAK, UPFA, DPLF, SLPF and the SLMC and three Independent groups were in the fray to elect 10 members with 11 members including the Bonus seat entering the Vavuniya UC. 197 persons had applied for Postal votes of which 183 were accepted.

The District Secretary (GA) for Badulla, Rohana Keerthi Dissanayake said that there were 577,814 registered voters in the district and 432 candidates belonging to 14 Political parties and four Independent groups in the fray to elect 21 members for 22 members including the bonus seat to enter the Uva PC from the Badulla District.

He said that 2125 Policemen of different ranks had been deployed for special elections duty under the directions of Senior DIG Badulla Kingsley Ekanayake and DIG Bandarawela H. N. B. Ambanpola under the personal supervision of SSP Bandarawela Police division Jayantha Fernando and SSP Badulla Division Ananda Wijesuriya with ASP E. M. W. S. Bandara at the helm.

Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the district of Badulla, Namal Talangama said that 17,422 persons had applied for casting Postal votes of which 16,059 were accepted.

Arrangements had been made to have 507 Polling Stations and 49 counting Centres and seven for counting Postal votes.

Talangama said that 507 SPOs, 1450 JPOs and 3610 clerical staff and 507 office helpers had been appointed for elections duty.

The District Secretary (GA) for Moneragala, J. J. Ratnasiri said that there were 300,642 registered voters in the district and 168 candidates belonging to nine political parties and three Independent Groups in the fray to elect 11 members to the Uva PC from the Moneragala district.

He said that arrangements had been made to have 307 polling stations and 29 counting centres including five for counting postal votes. Assistant Commissioner of Elections for the District of Moneragala K. J. S. Madhawa said that 10,816 had applied for postal voting of which 8,847 were accepted. Action had been taken to appoint 507 SPOs, 760 JPOs and 1835 clerical staff.

SSP of the Moneragala Police division Amarasiri Senaratna said that several thousand policemen of different ranks had been deployed for special poll duty under the directions of DIG H. N. B. Ambanwela.
