KSC go out favourites
With the League title already decided in favour of Kandy Sports Club (KSC) the champion outfit from the hills will go out favourites to beat their traditional rivals Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club (CR & FC) in the final game of the Caltex inter-club rugby league tournament today at Nittawela grounds.
This mach despite the enthusiasm it generates and being played between the top two clubs in the island will not have any bearing on the league trophy which has already been decided in favour of KSC who have succeeded in retaining the trophy for the last nine years in a row which is an unmatched feat in the history of rugby football in the island.
Thus, the only interest in this game would be to discover who takes the honours and the victory margin. Yet another important feature of this tussle is the fact that this is an encounter of two rugby giants.
The rugby Development Manager of KSC Lasantha Wijesuriya speaking to ‘The Island’ said that it had been a very intricate task for his boys in the second round of the tournament in particular where the players had to travel to Welisara, Ratmalana and Colombo every weekend for six long weeks, and despite all the hardships the players have yet again established their class.
Speaking about today’s game Lasantha was of the view that the players were confident and that they intend to wrap up affairs in style.
KSC that has had eleven outings this season were able to record ten wins and their only defeat was against the giant killers Navy SC to whom they went down to by one point (11-12) in Welisra a fortnight ago, but they bounced back well when they registered a convincing 42-11 win against Army Sports Club which enabled the defending champions to impede the path of any other contender in reaching the top yet.
CR & FC who have also had eleven outings thus far and have won nine of them while they lost to KSC in the first round of the league at Longden Place by 17 points to 12 while in the second round like KSC, CR & FC too suffered a shocking 3-18 defeat at the hands of the sailors three weeks ago. Yet they managed to come back strongly in the two outings that followed where they outplayed Army SC 24-6 and Air Force SC by a massive 55-0 last weekend.
