Rwanda, Congo presidents meet to improve relations
KINSHASA, Congo (AP) - The presidents of Rwanda and Congo are meeting as part of an ongoing effort to improve strained relations.
Paul Kagame and Joseph Kabila are in Goma, Congo on Thursday to improve diplomatic relations broken in the aftermath of Rwanda's brutal 1994 genocide.
In July, Congo named its first ambassador to neighboring Rwanda in more than a decade.
Congo cut off diplomatic relations with Rwanda over its support of a rebel movement whose mission was to hunt Rwandan Hutu fighters who sought refuge in eastern Congo after the genocide. The two countries normalized relations in 2007.
In January, both armies teamed up to conduct a joint offensive in eastern Congo aimed at disarming the Rwandan Hutu fighters still in Congo.
