Recently the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Bestowed a Honorary
Fellowship (Hon. FAIA) on Architect Nela de Zoysa. The prestigious event
took place at a solemn investiture held at the Grace Cathedral in San
Francisco, California. Advancement to Honourary Fellowship is one of the
highest honours the American Institute of Architects awards their
International Colleagues with. This fellowship not only recognizes the
achievements of the architect as an individual, but also elevates before
the International Public and Profession a model architect who has made a
significant contribution to Architecture and Society at an international
level. She is not just the only Sri Lankan after Deshamanya Geoffrey
Bawa to receive this honour, but has the added distinction of being the
first woman not only in the SAARC region but also the region extending
from France to the Philippines. A Black Tie Dinner was given by the
President of RIBA Marvin Malecha. Nela who has won many many awards has
also created style and makes her own statement not only in her
architectural designs but also with her clothes sense. For the
investiture she wore saree from Satya Paul in blue and white, which
looked like blue skies against which were a large dove of peace in
white. Her blouse was in the blue and her ornaments consisted of three
strands of pearls and blue drops off a pearl stud.
For the formal dinner she made a dramatic impact in a black saree bordered in white and two shades of oyster pink, with a band of dull gold sequins at the hemlines, with an ivory blouse with the border at the edge of the sleeves. This time her three strand necklace of pearls were in the three tones on the border with pearl and diamond drops for earrings. Needless to say she made fashion news at both these occasions.
