Badulla District UNP parliamentarian Lakshman Seneviratne yesterday complained to the IGP and the Elections Commissioner that UPFA candidate for the Uva Province, Anura Vidanagamage had led a gang which raided the house of UNP Pradeshiya Sabha member Muthu Banda and attacked him, his child, wife and mother.
Muthu Banda has been hospitalized with grievous injuries following the attack, the MP told the Sunday Island.
Seneviratne who represents the Mahiyanghana constituency said that it was irregular and illegal for a candidate to have a Sub Inspector of police and two PCs for his personal security. These policemen had also assisted the candidate to carry out the attack, he charged.
"They had arrived in about 15 vehicles to attack Muthu Banda and his family", he asserted.
He said he complained to the Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake who took prompt action.
The MP said the incident had taken place around 12 noon yesterday at Ridimayalidda, Horubandiwewa. The victim and his family members were threatened with death if they complained to the police, Seneviratne said.
