Condolence vote on Galle MC opposition leader passed unanimously

The Galle Municipal Council passed a vote of condolence on the death of opposition leader Dushantha Seneviratne (UNP), recently.

With Mayor Methsiri Silva presiding, the vote of condolence was moved Dilip Nishantha on behalf of the UNP and Kumara Dhammika representing the ruling UPFA. It was seconded by Chandana Nanayakkara (MEP).

Mayor Methsiri Silva said the late Dushantha Seneviratne was a popular politician much loved and respected by the people. He always highlighted the grievances faced by the suffering masses with the aim of granting them relief.

He said the police had still not been able to apprehend the assailants behind the slaying of the opposition leader. An impartial investigation is underway to trace those responsible for this dastardly act.

The Mayor said that as a municipal councilor, Seneviratne rendered yeoman service to the people of Galle since his entry into politics in 1997.

Dilip Nishantha (UNP) called for the immediate arrest of the two assailants responsible for the killing of the opposition leader. The Galle police had failed to trace the killers though it is now more than two weeks since the slaying.

PA Councilors Kelum Seneviratne, Parakrama Dahanayake, Gemunu Premalal and Kumara Dhammika, Chandana Nanayakkara (MEP), Sumith Gunaratne (JVP) and Fouuzal Niyaz (UNP) also spoke.

The vote of condolence was passed unanimously.

The next sessions of the council will be held on August 22, 2009.
