      Editorial:Of that broadside at 'King'

The police brutally assaulted hundreds of cricket fans with valid tickets to view the T-20 International between Sri Lanka and Pakistan on Wednesday at R. Premadasa (Kettarama) stadium.Unprecedented security checks conducted without prior notice caused a protracted delay and thousands of spectators were denied entry even after the match commenced. Unable to control the seething crowd, the police first shut the gates on them and then set upon irate spectators who became restive. Among the victims of police brutality were women and children.

Angulana explodes after two youth die in police custody
Fourteen policemen, including the Officer in Charge of the Angulana Police Post, who were on duty on Wednesday night were taken in for questioning by Mount Lavinia Police yesterday following the deaths of two youths while in police custody, Western Province (South) DIG Prasanna Nanayakkara said.

Nurses union threatens SPC health authorities
The Government Nursing Officers’ Association urged the Southern Provincial health authorities to immediately suspend training of nursing assistants. They warned they would resort to trade union action if this erroneous practice by the Health Ministry of the Southern Provincial Council is not stopped.
