Mangala urges President to abolish Executive Presidency
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (Mahajana Wing) Leader Mangala Samaraweera said he was urging President Mahinda Rajapaksa to abolish the Executive Presidency.
At a press conference held in Colombo yesterday, Samaraweera said the Executive Presidency had led to the collapse of the socio- political structure of Sri Lanka and excessive powers vested in the Executive Presidency led to the politicization of Police and the Judiciary.
"The rule of the law must be restored in this country. Today our society is becoming a cartoon society. Even adults don’t have the freedom to watch the Adults Only movies".
President Rajapaksa when he was the Prime Minister had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva on September 8, 2005 that the Executive Presidency would be abolished with the Sixth Executive Presidency, he said.
Before the prorogation of Parliament on April 1, a bill should be presented to Parliament to get the two-third majority to abolish the Executive Presidency.
All 224 members of Parliament, excluding the Speaker, would agree to it. Samaraweera said that if needed, he would be a mediator to get the two-third majority in parliament.
After the General Elections, he wished to see his old friend made the Prime Minister or as the Leader of the Opposition.
